Developing good oral health habits in children is the responsibility of all parents. Parents have to know their child’s level of dentition at different age groups and assist them with the correct brushing techniques for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

Basic Brushing Guidance for Children in Different Age Groups

Baby Teeth (6 months – 3 years)

Parents to perform brushing for baby

The first tooth usually appears at the age of 6 months to 1 year old and parents have to start brushing for the baby at this stage.

Parents should use a soft bristles toothbrush to brush their child’s teeth. Soft bristles can protect their tender gum and also provide a comfortable brushing experience without pain.

Lay down your child’s head on your knee, place the bristle tips on the tooth surface, and move gently in a small motion. Brush the four chewing surfaces in the molars and the upper front teeth with extra care as these are the areas that easily cause dental caries.

Milk Teeth (3 years – 6 years)

Parents to perform check-up brushing

Most children start to brush their own teeth at this stage. However, parents need to check and help brush the areas that may have been missed. Brush the center area with the entire tips of the bristle and brush the left and right areas with the edge of the bristles for a totally clean tooth.

Mixed Dentition (6 years – 9 years) & Permanent Teeth (9 years – 12 years)

Parents to supervise brushing

This is an important stage where children go through a rapid change in dental development. Their jaw is growing bigger and gaps start to appear between teeth. The first molar (permanent teeth) starts to erupt and mostly will cause misalignment between teeth.

Parents should continue to monitor and supervise brushing by using the check-up brushing method because certain parts of the teeth are hard to reach due to the misalignment between teeth. Parents’ role is to ensure every part of the teeth is covered.

Parents play an important role in encouraging their children to practice good brushing habits by guiding them with the correct techniques at different stages. This should start as early as the first tooth erupts to ensure your child has good oral health since young.

“When should parents start tooth brushing for their children?”

Parents should start brushing for kids when the first tooth erupts at around 6 to 7 months. Start brushing for kids at the baby teeth stage to get them familiar with the toothbrush and prepare them for good brushing habits in the future. Brush their teeth with a soft bristles toothbrush to avoid a bad brushing experience which can cause pain.

Brushing an infant’s teeth is very challenging until you become familiar with it. Therefore, just perform it once a day at first when the infant is in a good mood. You can increase the brushing frequency from 1 to 3 times a day according to the frequency of the meals.

Clothes need to be sorted to achieve optimum washing as well as to ensure the clothes last longer.

Clothes should be sorted by:

  • By fabric: Separate delicate fabrics that require a gentle cycle from heavier items.
  • By color: Separate whites from colors, and pastels from dark colors.
  • By soil: Soil can travel from one garment to another so wash heavily soiled garments separately.
  • Lint: Check pockets and remove tissues before washing. Wash heavy lint shedders, especially blankets, chenille bedspreads, rugs, and woolens separately, and clean out the lint filter in your washing machine regularly.

Do Use the Right Amount of Detergent

It is important to use just the right amount of detergent. Don’t think adding more detergent than necessary will get your clothes extra clean. It will not. If you’re noticing that our clothes are stiff, smell strongly of soap, and have flecks of powder on them, then you’re using too much. Use only the amount recommended on your detergent’s label.

Do Use a Laundry Bag for Delicates

Delicates can be really anything but mostly underwear, silks, and whites are the ones you need to watch out for. If the items are very precious to you, put them into a bag before adding them to the washing machine.

Don’t Overload Your Machine

Don’t overload your washer with clothes even if you have a lot of clothes to wash. Overloading can offset the balance of the drum, which can cause the cycle to fail at the spin cycle, leaving you with soapy wet clothes. Also, clothes need to have water to agitate around them during washing. For the best cleaning and care of your machine, make sure the level of dry clothes does not exceed the level of the inner tub.

Don’t Forget to Pre-Treat Stains.

Stained clothes must be pre-treated before being placed in the washing machine. Most stains can be removed completely, provided that they are handled promptly and properly.

Stains are not stubborn. You just need to learn their kryptonite to remove the unwanted spots on your fabric. Always remember to:

Laundry is a duty that everyone wants to get rid of as soon as humanly possible. I’m sure we all had daydreams of dumping our garments into a box to magically restore them to their original state. Although we may not have it in reality, these methods are your next best thing.

Don’t neglect your laundry

If you keep your working clothes in a bag to do a workout, remember to wash them as soon as possible. The best way to get rid of dirt and smell is to wash it as soon as possible. Even if the daily laundry basket yields only a few articles, it would be smart to just hand wash them.

Sort your laundry by:

Color

Separate light-colored fabrics from dark ones. Dark color fabrics usually bleed dye during wash, tainting the lighter ones. Do not mix them during laundry.

Fabric

Identify the types of fabric, and separate them accordingly. Some of the rough fabric can damage the delicates.

Soil Level

Fabric with stains should not be mixed with other laundry articles. They can easily transfer the soil which would make your job harder than it already is. Set it aside for pre-treatment.

Check your laundry

After sorting them all out, it is important to check your laundry to ensure the pockets are empty, zippers are closed, buttons are undone and clothes are inside out. These are all preventative measures to allow your garments to last longer.

Pre-treat your soiled fabrics

Stains are not stubborn if you know exactly how to handle them. Check the fabric care label and identify the type of stains before proceeding. Although you should always treat it promptly, it is also important to understand it. Most stains can be removed simply by applying our JET powder detergent on the stain before washing it accordingly.

Add detergent at the right time

If your washing machine has a designated dispenser for detergent, all you need to do is fill it in with our JET powder detergent and let it work its magic. However, if it is not available; you should add it when the machine is filled halfway with water. Avoid adding it directly on top of your garments as it may damage them. On the other hand, softener should be added at the beginning of the final rinse.

Dry, Iron, and Store

Shake them out so they will dry more easily and with less wrinkles. Dry under the sun as it always gives a fresh and natural feeling to your fabric. Don’t hang wet woolen fabrics, just lay them flat on a towel under direct sunlight to prevent misshapen garments. Iron accordingly, from garments requiring the lowest heat. Iron in a straight motion, lengthwise to prevent stretching. Ensure the clothes are cool and dry before folding them. Store the garments loosely to allow them to breathe and air to circulate. Prevent from storing them in humid places away from the light. If necessary, use chemical desiccant to absorb the moisture.
